Broken Sword 3 - Review for PC
by: Isak

Broken Sword 3 - The Sleeping Dragon was the first Broken Sword game in 3D. But was it a good choise by Revolution? Were they still that good at telling us about George and Nicos adventures, that they had been six years earlier? Was Broken Sword 3 as good as it's prequels? Read all about it in the review:

Story
Broken Sword 3 is a little "back to the roots". If you play the first or the second game (which is recommended to do before you start on this game), you'll recognize yourself more from the first game, because the Templars are back! In Broken Sword 3 we are told about George Stobbart and Nico Collard, who seems to have lost contact with eachother. But they'll meet again soon, because both of them are drawn into the same adventure. This time, the Templars are back... And it seems that it can feel a little boring with the same Legend (Templars were the Legend in Broken Sword 1 too). But Revolution have done the story very well, and you never get tired of the story, since it floats on good.

Graphics
When I first were told about Broken Sword 3 I was very glad... until I heard that it was going to be 3D. But some months before the game were going to be released I saw a trailer and thought that 3D maybe was a good choise. When I started to Broken Sword 3, I was conviced: Broken Sword works just as good in 3D as it did in 2D. Except that the characters are a little edgy (only Ps2 version though), the graphics is awsome: The Backgrounds is now in full 3D (which makes George and Nico moveable all over the screen), the characters are moving extremly realistic, and if Geroge for example is in a long coversation with someone and Nico stands and waiting for George, she can wipe dust from her shoulders if she is bored. Nice! The movies is like the game graphics (even a little more good looking!) but the ending movie is stunning!

Sound
Probably one of the strongest points in the game: the sound. Rolf Saxon is back as George and does a great job as usuall. Barrington Pheloung who did the music for Broken Sword 1&2 have been replaced to Ben McCullough. But could the music be better than in Broken Sword 1&2? No, but just as good. Ben McCullough does a really good job, and get the right mood, wheter your going to talk to an old mad lady or sneak past a guard. The ending theme (Love us) done by "We love U" is a really cool rock song, which you maybe thought wouldn't fit in in Broken Sword, but it does!

Gameplay
How does all the classical "adventure-game-puzzle-moments" work out in such a revolutionary game as Broken Sword 3? In the whole, it works out quite good. But sometimes you notice that Revolution have needed to use one puzzle a little too often. The legendary "Box puzzle"... It's very simple, you need to get the right combination of boxes to get forward in the game. It's OK for me with more than one of these puzzles, but in Broken Sword 3 it have been a little to many of these. But other things such as the stealh function (it means that you have to sneak past a guard and hide in the shadows) has been added. It maybe sounds strange with these things in an adventure game, but it works out really well, because it's not so many times you need to use stealh, and it isn't so hard. Broken Sword 3 - The sleeping dragon isn't the longest Broken Sword game in the series (and all fans want's more of course) but it took me about 8-10 hours to finish the game, and thats quite fair. Broken Sword 3 is shorter than Broken Sword 1 but longer than Broken Sword 2. The only really big minus this game can get is long loading times for the Ps2 and X-Box version. It can be really frustrating and sometimes it feels that the loading times are longer than a commercial break on tv.

Control
Revolution have changed the classic "point 'n' click" controls to the D-Pad/keyboard. It might sound like a stupid thing to do, but the game is in 3D and it works really good. George and Nico are easy to control and the control is very easy to learn

Conclusion
Broken Sword 3 deserves it's place in the Broken Sword trioligy. With awsome story, graphics, sound, gameplay, control, Broken Sword 3 writes itself into the adventure games history. But there is one thing Revolution should think about... The loading times :).

5/5 - Perfect
