Interview - Rolf Saxon, voice actor of George.
by: Rob - 4/8 2004
Broken Sword Zone - Hi Rolf! How are you?
Rolf - Fine thanks
Hows work at the moment?
Very well thanks, off for a holiday for a couple of weeks then back to work.
Besides The Broken Sword trilogy, many people around the world know you for
work in famous movies, can you tell us a few movies you have been in?
Not all that many really. In fact most of the films I've done are low
budget or small distribution as they are usually made in Europe. There
have been a couple of exceptions with Mission Impossible and Saving Private
Ryan - though with SPR I hardly appear in the final cut.
Do you have any upcoming projects lined up?
Yes. After my holiday I come back to do a Michael Frayn play here in
London. That will hopefulty take me into next year.
Do you have time to play many games and if so what are some of your
faviorates?
I'm afraid I don't play them all that often. When I do, I go in for the
conquest stuff like Civilisation or Masters of Orion.
Could you tell us how you were involved in the Broken Sword trilogy?
I had a friend who was already on board for the first game and she
suggested me for George. I met the director and had a chat with him and it
sounded a good deal so I said yes.
How did Revolution get hold of you?
I was contacted by Charles after my initial meeting and we have stayed in
contact from then.
Did you do any smaller voice overs within in the game?
I think I voiced the goat in 1 or 2. I know I wanted to do others but was
not allowed to.
Whats your faviorate line ever spoken by George?
Don't really remember.
Sorry. I liked the funny ones best.
Do you have a favorite character?
Personally I really liked George and
Nico's relationship best of all. I thought they developed the
relationship very well.
What was the hardest of the three to act?
The first one wihout a doubt!!!! It took 2 solid 6 day weeks of 10 hour
days. It was the first one and everyone was worried about how best to go
about it. We weren't even half way through it when we were contacted by
the German post production unit saying that they already had more script
than they had ever had for a single game. Very long and very difficult.
BUT it really was a laugh for the most part. The party at the end was
pretty good too.
How did you feel when you heard that the third was to be moved from 2d to
3d?
I understand there was quite a bit of back and forth about this decision
both amongst the Revolution team and the BS fans. Personally I think it's
a good move. Progress, the next step and all that. I think the most
important thing about the Broken Swords have been the story lines and the
dialogue with the visuals coming a close third. Therefore I think the
change will be a problem for some - a big problem maybe, but I think the
game will prove itself as it has done in the past.
Did you think it payed off?
That's a difficult call. I suppose sales and critical acclaim (not
necessarily in that order) will tell in the end. It's difficult to know
what to do with a winning formula. The expression "if it ain't broke don't
fix it" comes to mind. Then again you can find yourself stagnating into
oblivion if you don't stay fresh. Time will tell. I'm keeping my fingers
crossed.
And finally to our last question Rolf, there have been rumors floating
around of a possibility of a fourth Broken Sword eventually being made, if
asked would you like to be part of it?
If Charles and co. think I would be right for them again, I would love to.
It's been a real kick to be a part of something like this. We started out
doing something new and innovative and it worked and has gone on longer
than I certainly thought it would. Charles may have had an inkling but I
bet he wouldn't have thought that close to 10 years later he would still be
working on Broken Sword.
Thank you for your time Mr saxon, its been a pleasure talking to you and I
wish you well in the future!
It's been a pleasure and I wish you all the best too Rob. Take it easy and
here's to number 4!
